Expert Hair Loss Diagnosis and Treatment

At The Blackwell Clinic, we see and assess hair loss conditions in men, women, and children of all hair types. We offer personalised care for a wide range of hair loss conditions and specialise in the diagnosis and treatment of non-scarring alopecia.

Our dermatology-trained doctors combine clinical expertise with the latest in regenerative therapies to restore confidence and optimise hair health. Hair thinning or shedding can be distressing but with the right diagnosis and personalised plan, significant improvement is achievable.

What is Alopecia?

Alopecia is the medical term for hair loss. It refers to conditions where you experience thinning, shedding, or bald patches on the scalp or other areas of the body. Hair loss can affect anyone including men, women, and children and can vary from mild to more extensive.

There are two main categories of alopecia:

Non-scarring alopecia
In these conditions, the hair follicle remains alive, which means hair regrowth is often possible with the right treatment. Non-scarring hair loss is the most common type and includes conditions such as male and female pattern hair loss, telogen effluvium, and alopecia areata.

Scarring alopecia (Cicatricial Alopecia)
This is a less common but more serious type of hair loss where inflammation or damage destroys the hair follicle permanently. Early diagnosis and treatment are essential to prevent further loss. Examples include Lichen Planopilaris and Central Centrifugal Cicatricial Alopecia (CCCA), which is more common in women of African or Afro-Caribbean descent.

Common Types of Hair Loss We Treat

We assess and treat a wide range of hair loss conditions, including:

Androgenetic Alopecia (male & female pattern hair loss): The most common form of hair thinning, often due to genetics and hormones. Men typically notice a receding hairline or thinning crown, while women experience overall thinning, especially along the part line and over the crown.

Telogen Effluvium: A temporary, diffuse shedding often triggered by stress, illness, weight loss, or hormonal changes (e.g., after childbirth or menopause). With time and the right support, regrowth usually occurs.

Alopecia Areata: An autoimmune condition that causes patchy hair loss on the scalp, beard area, or other body parts. It can be unpredictable but may respond well to medical treatment.

Traction Alopecia: Hair loss caused by repeated tension from tight hairstyles, braids, or extensions. It often affects the hairline and is reversible if caught early.

Central Centrifugal Cicatricial Alopecia (CCCA): A progressive scarring alopecia commonly affecting Black women. It typically starts at the crown and spreads outwards. Early diagnosis is key to slowing progression.

Frontal Fibrosing Alopecia: A type of scarring hair loss that causes the front hairline to recede, often accompanied by thinning of the eyebrows. This condition mostly affects postmenopausal women.

How We Diagnose Hair Loss

All hair loss patients at The Blackwell Clinic undergo a comprehensive consultation. We use:

  • Trichoscopy (dermoscopic scalp analysis): Helps identify the pattern and severity of loss.
  • Clinical history and blood tests: Assess contributing factors such as hormones or nutritional status.
  • Scalp Biopsy (if needed): For complex or unclear cases.

This ensures an accurate diagnosis before treatment is recommended.

Personalised Hair Loss Treatments

We provide bespoke, evidence-based treatment plans that may include a combination of in-clinic procedures and home therapies. These are tailored based on hair type, pattern of loss, gender, and medical history.

In-Clinic Treatments

  • Mesotherapy with Dutasteride: Microinjections of medication directly into the scalp to reduce DHT levels (offered only after medical assessment).
  • Intralesional Steroid Injections: For inflammatory types of hair loss or resistant shedding.
  • Polynucleotides: Injectable DNA-based regenerative therapy to support hair follicle health.
  • PRP (Platelet-Rich Plasma): Uses your body’s own platelets to promote regrowth.
  • Microneedling: Stimulates scalp blood flow and growth factor release.
  • Mesotherapy: Micro scalp injections of vitamins, amino acid, minerals to help nourish and rejuvenate hair.
  • Exosomes Therapy: Cell-derived vesicles rich in growth factors and proteins to stimulate follicle repair.

Topical and Oral Medications

  • Prescription medications such as oral minoxidil, finasteride, dutasteride, and spironolactone (used in women for hormonal hair loss) may be recommended when clinically appropriate, following a medical consultation.
  • Compounded Treatments: Specially formulated topical or oral blends tailored to your diagnosis.
  • Topical Minoxidil: A common first-line treatment to extend the hair growth phase.

Prescription treatments are provided only following clinical assessment and are subject to medical suitability. We do not promote or advertise prescription-only medicines directly to the public.

Frequently Asked Questions

We begin every consultation with a detailed scalp analysis (trichoscopy), medical history, and blood tests to identify possible causes such as hormonal imbalance, nutritional deficiencies, or autoimmune factors. An accurate diagnosis ensures we target the root of the problem rather than just the symptoms.

At The Blackwell Clinic, we routinely test for vitamin deficiencies as a cause for hair loss.  Low levels of certain vitamins and minerals can contribute to shedding or poor hair growth. The most common deficiencies linked to hair loss include:

  • Vitamin D – important for follicle cycling and regrowth.
  • Iron (Ferritin) – low stores can trigger diffuse shedding.
  • Vitamin B12 and Biotin – essential for keratin production.
  • Zinc – supports scalp and follicle repair.

Both medications block the conversion of testosterone into dihydrotestosterone (DHT) the hormone primarily responsible for pattern hair loss.

  • Finasteride inhibits about 70% of DHT activity.
  • Dutasteride blocks roughly 90% and is therefore more potent.
Dutasteride may be used when finasteride gives limited results or in patients with more advanced loss. However, it’s not suitable for everyone and must be prescribed only after medical assessment. Our doctors will determine the safest and most effective option for you.

Yes. PRP is one of the most evidence-based regenerative treatments for hair thinning. It involves injecting your own platelets into the scalp to release growth factors that:

  • Stimulate dormant hair follicles
  • Improve blood flow and nutrient delivery
  • Extend the hair growth phase (anagen)

Most patients notice thicker, stronger hair after a course of 3–6 sessions, with results continuing to improve for months. Typical regimes are a session a month for 3 months then top up sessions every 6 months.

Yes. Hormonal patterns and responses differ. Men often benefit from finasteride or dutasteride, while women may respond better to spironolactone. Treatment is always personalised to your hormone profile, hair type, and aesthetic goals.

Most in-clinic procedures such as PRP, microneedling, or mesotherapy have minimal downtime. You may experience mild redness, tenderness, or pin-point bleeding, which typically resolves within 24–48 hours.

Hair growth follows a slow cycle, so visible improvements usually take 3–4 months. Ongoing maintenance is recommended to preserve results, especially in genetic forms of hair loss.

Absolutely. The best outcomes often come from a multi-modal plan combining in-clinic therapies like PRP or exosomes with topical or oral medications and nutritional optimisation.
